Lin Engineering hastens manufacture of dc motors for fight against COVID-19

With the recent COVID-19 outbreak, demand for medical equipment has quickly risen. Many such devices incorporate precision electric motors. To support efforts to combat COVID-19, Lin Engineering — a designer and manufacturer of precision electric motors and motion systems — is prioritizing the production and supply of motors to support companies making medical devices critical in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Highest priority is supplying motors to the makers of medical ventilators and related equipment needed for respiratory care as well as devices to diagnose and treat COVID-19 patients.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that can cause serious respiratory problems necessitating the use of ventilators to help patients struck ill with the coronavirus breathe. A key part of a ventilator is the motor to pump air.

Depending on the design, ventilators employ an array of motors, including:

  • Hybrid stepper motors
  • Standard bldc motors
  • Frameless bldc motors
  • Slotless motors
  • Coreless bldc motors

Lin Engineering designs and produces all of these motor types to support ventilator applications. All motors from the supplier are customizable to deliver maximum operational efficiency at the required voltage and amperage — and ensure seamless system integration.

Lin Engineering motors come in myriad subtypes, frame sizes, and formats — often sporting custom housings, shafts, leads, and connectors — for customized designs that seamlessly fit into medical devices.

Lin Engineering’s Northern California manufacturing facility doubles as a prototyping facility led by engineers on premises. The engineers have access to the equipment used to produce the motors in volume … and that in turn ensures the motor manufacturer supplies accurate prototypes quickly, as the engineers are involved with the entire process. This arrangement also ensures prototypes work exactly as volume-manufactured parts.

The motor maker’s manufacturing facilities within the United States and in Asia allow quick manufacture of motors at high volumes. The company’s Northern California facility is optimized for low to mid-volume production … the off-shore facilities are optimized for high volume production and quick scaling of throughput for an array of manufacturing requirements.
