Depending on the application, the prevailing conditions for tunneling technology are extreme temperature ranges, heavy contamination, strong vibration, and continuous operation 24/7 all year long. The construction material is transferred to conveyor belts and transported several kilometers for processing.
To transfer the high levels of torque to the main and auxiliary drives of the conveyor belts, R+W BX series torsionally rigid metal bellows couplings are used. Depending on the scope of the application, a metal bellows couplings can be designed and arranged precisely to fulfill the required needs. A variable intermediate tube is used so that the rugged couplings can tolerate major shaft misalignment with minor restoring forces at the same time. An additional safety feature, which is not offered by alternative products, is the integrated support of the metal bellows. For applications in open-pit and underground mining, options are also available in an ATEX-approved design.
