Greater Manchester based cable seal manufacturer Roxtec has been commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) to supply the upgrade of the London Underground (LU) system, providing seals for trackside modernisation.
Roxtec UK managing director Graham O’Hare said the company’s seals are being used because of their proven track record in protecting against multiple hazards.
“We offer more than the standard firestop solution,” he said. “Roxtec products seal against fire, gas, water and vermin and can provide electromagnetic compatibility.
“Our cable penetrations are being used in relocatable equipment buildings (REBs) which sit trackside and offer a one-hour fire rating. The seals provide a vital barrier for the cables, protecting people and infrastructure in the event of a fire.
“These REBs are critical to the efficient running of the Tube system. They contain signalling, power, telecommunications, uninterruptible power supply systems, CCTV equipment and switchgear.
“The switchroom at Hammersmith will also have our single entry seals and sleeves in the roof to seal power cables entering the area, also offering an hour’s protection against fire.”
Mr O’Hare said the overall upgrade project is due for completion in 2018 and will bring increased frequency of trains, a state-of-the-art signalling system, more reliable services and improved accessibility.
“LU required a range of sealing products which will not only seal the Tube’s cabling network to protect assets but also offer long-term reliability,” he said. “The supplied seals are halogen free and tested and approved according to applicable industry standards, making them perfect for an underground tunnel environment.
He added: “Installation is fast and they will also be straightforward to maintain in the coming years and can be easily upgraded if needed for future projects on the underground network, providing a great return for the capital’s tax payers.”
Roxtec’s UK operation is run from Waterfold Business Park in Bury.
