I had a nice chat with Greg Brown ofRYCO Hydraulicsat MINExpo last month, and it all revolved around safety. Greg was showing me their Crocbite product, an ingenious product for connecting large hoses that are frequently used in longwall mining applications. Instead of the traditional “staples” that connect large hoses, RYCO designed a product that looks like a series of metal teeth connected by wires that slides into the connection hole and makes contact along the entire circumference of the connector. This segmented, flexible fitting cannot be disconnected under pressure, and it features far superior impulse and pressure capability over the traditional staple type products.
A great idea, for sure, but as we stood there chatting about safety, he showed me something else that really struck me—a wallet card that explains the five pieces of critical information you need to give you doctor in case of a hydraulic fluid injection industry.
* Type of fluid.
* Amount of fluid injected.
* Pressure of fluid injected.
* Degree of spread of infected material.
* Time between injection and treatment.
Greg explained that most doctors don’t know how serious injection injuries are, something I’ve heard over and over through the years. There’s even a space on the front of the card where the user can write the name of nearby hospitals that are experienced in treating these types of injuries—something that you won’t want to have to start researching AFTER the injury, when time is of great importance. My hat’s off to RYCO for not just talking about safety, but for going the extra mile and providing their customers this thoughtful service.
